GooSync Contacts support is only available for users of the subscription service
of GooSync. If you have not yet upgraded to the GooSync Premium account you can
do so by using the upgrade account button on the home page once you are logged into
your account.
Please find below details on how to use and synchronise the Contacts section of
your GooSync account.
If you need to ask specific technical questions please submit these to our support forum.
GooSync can now also synchronise directly with Google Contacts. For full details
please check the Google Contacts Help
page.

Adding, Modifying and Deleting Contacts
To access your GooSync Contacts click the My Contacts link on the menu bar of your
GooSync account.
On your first visit to this page you will see the Contacts menu bar and the Add
Contact button.
To add your first contact click the Add Contact button. This will show you the following
screen:
By default only the First and Last Name fields will be displayed. To add additional
fields you simply select them from the relevant drop-down controls and they will
be displayed on screen (see below):
These additional fields can also be deleted if you no longer require them by clicking
the trash can icon (
)
next to each individual field.
The data on the left side of the contact screen can only be selected once (only
one First Name or Home Address field for example), but the data on the right side
of the screen can be selected and displayed multiple times (to allow for multiple
email addresses for example).
Once contacts have been added to your account you will see them in a list view on
the main Contacts page of your GooSync account:
The Contact column can be used to sort your contacts in ascending or descending
order. This column will show data from the following fields, depending on what is
available:
- Display Name
- First Name and/or Last Name
- Organisation Name
If none of those fields contain data for your contact then it will be listed as
[unnamed] in your contacts list.
The Number and Email columns will show the first number/email address it detects
from your contact details.
To edit a contact you must click on its name from the main contacts list. This will
display your contact where you can add, edit or remove data and fields:
In order to delete a contact you must click the trash can icon (
) shown next to each contact on the My Contacts
screen.
By clicking the trash can icon in header of your contacts list you can delete all
contacts in the selected category.
For example: selecting the "All" category and clicking this trash can icon will
delete all of your contacts.
Selecting the "Business" category and clicking that trash can icon will delete all
contacts that are set to "Business", leaving all other contacts intact.
You can also use the check boxes to the left of each contact to select individual
contacts. Once you have made your selection you can either choose to delete them
using the "Delete selected" option at the bottom of your screen, or you can use
the "Move to..." drop down control to move the selected contacts to the category
of your choice. After selecting a category click the "Move" link to complete the
category transfer.

Custom Contact Fields
Custom Fields can be added to your contacts by clicking the Custom link on the My
Contacts page. This will show you the Custom Contact Fields screen:
From here you can add, edit and delete custom fields for use with your GooSync contacts.
The Field Name column is the name of the custom field as it will appear on the Add
and Edit Contact screens. The VCard Name column is the name of the custom field
as it will appear if you export your data from GooSync as a VCard file.
Each custom field name must be unique and you can also not give them the same name
as the default contact fields (you cannot have a custom field called First Name
for example). Also, you must not use extended characters in the VCard Name column
as this will be invalid for the VCard format.
All custom fields created here will be shown in the Add and Edit Contact screens
under the Contact Info section. Once created they are used the same as the default
contact fields.
In the example above some custom fields have been created for GroupWise and Palm
OS contacts. The VCard Name for these custom fields have been entered exactly as
they would appear in an exported VCard file from those systems.
This means that when a VCard file from those systems is imported into GooSync you
will be able to successfully match up the custom fields from GroupWise to the custom
fields created in GooSync.

Contact Categories
Contact categories can be created for your GooSync Contacts by clicking the Categories
link on the My Contacts page. This will show you the Categories screen:
Categories can be added, edited and deleted from this screen.
If you delete a category that contains contacts those contacts will be moved into
the Unfiled category.
All categories created here will be selectable from the main Contacts screen (so
you can filter your contacts by category) and also from the Add and Edit Contact
screens.
It is also possible to select a category when using the Import Contacts feature.
This will allow you to automatically import your contacts directly into the required
category.

Importing Contacts
GooSync provides the ability to import contacts from .csv and .vcf files. To start
the import process click the Import link on the My Contacts screen.
After clicking the Import link you will be presented with the first step of the
import wizard:
- Select the type of file you wish to import from (.csv or .vcf)
- Locate and select this file on your machine
- For .csv files you must now select and match the columns you wish to import (more
details on this can be found below)
- Select the Contacts category where you want your imported contacts to go
- Check your settings and start the import
- Confirmation is given on how many contacts were imported
When importing from a .csv file you will need to select the columns you wish to
import. An example of how this will appear is shown below:
All default contact fields as well as any custom fields will be available from the
drop-down controls on the right side of the screen.
GooSync will attempt to automatically match your .csv column headers to the contact
fields but there may be occasions where you will need to do this manually.
Your .csv file must contain valid column headers in order for GooSync
to correct import your data.
GooSync is not able to match up contacts during the import process. This means that
if you import a file containing contacts already present in GooSync they will be
added again and duplicates will be created.
If you are importing a file that contains a date value (a birthday field for example)
you must ensure that the date format of this field matches the date format selected
in your GooSync Settings.
PLEASE NOTE: If you are attempting to import a .csv file that was
previously exported from GooSync, and later modified in a spread sheet editor, GooSync
may not be able to process some of the contacts correctly. Certain spread sheet
editors will alter the format of certain fields (multi-line addresses for example)
meaning GooSync will no longer process them correctly.

Exporting Contacts
By clicking the Export link you will be given the option of exporting your data
in the following formats:
- GooSync CSV File
- Google CSV File
- Outlook 2003 CSV File
- vCard File
The Google and Outlook options are to be used if you plan in importing your GooSync
Contacts into either Google Contacts or Outlook.
When selecting the GooSync CSV File option you will be prompted to select the contact
fields you wish to export. Once these have been selected you can select which Category
you wish to export your data from.
The other export options will just give you the option of selecting which category
you wish to export your data from. Each option will save all the data it can find
in its own specific format.
For the Google format your data will be exported into 3 specific sections so will
appear correctly when imported into Google Contacts:
The Outlook option will export your data using the column headers used by Outlook
2003. This should allow your data to be imported into Outlook more efficiently.

Sync Settings
You can alter the sync settings for your Contacts from the My Device page.
These sync settings allow you to specify which contact categories you wish to synchronise
to your device (see below):
Selecting the "Sync all categories" option will automatically add all your existing
categories to the sync list, and will also automatically add any new categories
you create later to this sync list.
If you choose to manually select your categories any new ones you create will be
marked as not synced by default.

Restoring Device Contacts

you must do the following to ensure your GooSync Contacts are correctly transferred
to your device:
- Log into GooSync and go to the My Device page.
- Click the Change Device button.
- Select your device.
- If given the option copy your sync settings to the new device.
- Initiate the sync from your device.
This will ensure that GooSync correctly sends all of your contacts back down to
your device.

Changing Contacts Synchronisation
This process is done from the Connections page of
your GooSync account.
On this page you will see a message informing you what contacts manager you are
currently synchronising with (Google or GooSync). Next to this will be a Change
link.
Clicking this Change link will give you the option of changing your contacts
manager.
